Nokia Confirms The Nokia N900 With Maemo5

Hot on the heels of our re-introduction to the world, Nokia has finally made the rumored (and pre-reviewed) N900 a reality. This full touchscreen smartphone is the first smartphone to be powered by Nokia’s Maemo5 operating system, and features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, just like its predecessors, the N810 and the N97. However, the N900 features a few key differences that really make it stand out.

For starters, the Nokia N900 is the first device to use Maemo5, the latest version of the Maemo operating system. This version features an entirely new, finger-friendly user interface, along with the integration of several key applications, including a full Mozilla browser (with Flash support), Office suite and a usable email client -- including Mail for Exchange and full HTML support.

To earn its Nseries moniker, the Nokia N900 features a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a dual-LED flash, along with a sliding lens cover. The phone also includes 32GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot to boot. There is a standard 3.5mm audio port, as well as a front-facing VGA-resolution camera for video calls, where supported.

The Nokia N900 is also the first Nseries smartphone from Nokia to support T-Mobile’s US 3G network, thanks to its tri-band 3G (900/1700/2100MHz) support and quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz). WiFi and Bluetooth are also on board, in case you’d rather use it without a SIM card.

The Nokia N900 is expected to be available in October 2009, priced at 500EUR (US$713) before taxes and subsidies.

Sounds great, the only question now is which software will be available - from Nokia (Maps, Sports Tracker etc.) and from 3rd parties.

I can't imagine that Nokia keeps all the Ovi stuff only for S60 devices, this would make this device pretty much useless.
  • Agreed. We do know that it will have Ovi Maps, Nokia Messaging, and a few others - time will tell, though.

Awesome device, but why not a version with 3G on the 850 :(

Sorry to nitpick but I think there's a slight error in the specs you've listed. According to the specs on maemo.nokia.com, the video recording can go up to 848 × 480 pixels and up to 25fps.
  • @MK - you're right, I've fixed the post - thanks for the eagle eye!

Ricky do you know if it will come with a certain trial period of free navigation, i.e. 6 months or something like that?

    No, ATT 3G?

    :(
